Respond to limited protection

Audience: users. Editorial review: 2026-09-15.

Limited protection means not all required controls could be activated. A switch being on does not replace a successful status check.

Steps

Section titled “Steps”
  1. Do not send sensitive content while protection remains limited or cannot be verified.
  2. Read the popup notice. If it asks you to reload ChatGPT, reload the tab and check again.
  3. Check your Defend session and network connection.
  4. If the issue continues, tell your administrator the version, displayed state and general steps, without attaching the content you intended to send.

Resume sensitive use only after protection is restored and your policy permits it. Do not force a send or disable controls to remove the notice.
